Winter is known as “cold and flu season”, and we’ve certainly seen our share of these common illnesses in our area. So, we wanted to issue a reminder that chiropractic care isn’t just about back pain or sore necks. Did you know that regular chiropractic care may also boost your immune system?
Subluxations (compressions of nerve pathways) in the spine can cause some problems that you might not expect. As if back and neck pain aren’t bad enough, these compressions can actually impact the immune system.
Each of your body’s systems are controlled and coordinated by your nervous system. SInce your immune system is actually composed of many parts, including your spleen, thymus, and lymph nodes, they must access your nervous system in order to communicate with one another.
Think of your nerve pathways as a network of telephone wires, which they use to “call” each other and coordinate their activities. What happens if one or several of their “telephone wires” is compressed or damaged? You can imagine that the result might be a lot of dropped calls or fuzzy messages! And without precise communication and coordinated attacks, your immune system can become susceptible to viruses, bacteria, and even autoimmune disorders.
Gentle adjustments, as part of your routine chiropractic care, can relieve subluxations and may help to improve your immune system. In fact, studies have demonstrated an immediate surge in white blood cells (which fight disease) within minutes of a chiropractic adjustment.
If you’re concerned about your susceptibility to cold and flu season, schedule an appointment to discuss how chiropractic care can keep you and your family healthier this winter.
