As a chiropractor, some of the more common questions I receive concern sitting positions. Many clients have informed me that they sit a lot at work, and that this position seems to be causing them trouble. They want to know how to sit properly, and they need tips on the correct posture to prevent muscles soreness and stiffness.
One of the simplest solutions is to simply stand up and move around frequently. Sedentary jobs are more common these days, but few employers actually require you to sit continuously for eight hours. Set a timer, and get up to stretch periodically. Walk around on your breaks, and take a stroll to the water fountain frequently. This will help you to avoid compression in the lower back.
Sitting for long periods of time can also cause strain in the upper back. The Brugger’s Stretch, or relaxation technique, can help to relieve this tension. All you do is point your thumbs backward, and hold for a few seconds. Try to remember to perform this technique throughout the day.
While you’re stretching, give your neck some assistance. Look up for twenty seconds, then down, then to each side. This will help your neck to relax and maintain mobility.
